Meet The Winemaker
Giovanni Bonmartini-Fini has lived most of his life with one foot on each side of the Atlantic Ocean. He was born in MA but lived on his family’s farm on the shores of the beautiful Northern Italy’s Lake Garda, facing the Alps where he now makes wine.
He attended various schools in France, Italy, Belgium & the U.S. and is a Princeton graduate in Molecular Biology. He has always been fascinated with science and technology and speaks French, Italian & English fluently.
Living in Rome, Italy, Giovanni spends a great deal of his time leading the family wine business in the footsteps of generations before him. He produces Barone Fini wines, specializing in Pinot Grigio. He is passionate about wine and if it were up to him, he would prefer to spend all of his time in the vineyards.
Giovanni travels throughout the U.S. to represent Barone Fini and his family’s 500+ years of winemaking heritage. When he’s not selling toner cartridges or wine, he pursues his other passion - kite surfing. He and his wife Scilla have two sons, Francesco and Lorenzo.
Winemaking has been a part of our family history since 1497. Today we take a modern approach to wine making with two primary objectives; first, producing quality, approachable wines, and second, keeping our family-owned and operated business market-nimble, involving all members of our immediate family.
Our wines are entirely grown and produced in the Trentino-Alto Adige area of Italy to our winemaking specifications, where for decades our long-standing relationships and knowledge of the areas give us access to the best grapes grown from the vineyards we choose. We have only produced D.O.C wines, proving that our wines meet the highest standards from year to year.
Our Pinot Grigio
Starting with hand selected grapes from the legendary Valdadige wine making region of Italy, Barone Fini Valdadige Pinot Grigio delivers a wonderful taste experience. Soft, round fruit fills the mouth with ripe, juicy flavors. A long finish glides into flavors of ripe apples and lichee nuts. Barone Fini Valdadige Pinot Grigio is meant to be enjoyed with friends or alone, as an aperitif, or with shellfish, fowl, vegetarian dishes or a light meal.
What is D.O.C.?
There are 4 major categories of Italian Wines:
- VdT (Vino Da Tavola)
- IGT (Vino a Indicazione Geografica)
- DOC (Vino a Denominazione di Origine Controllata)
- DOCG (Vino a Denominazione di Origine Contollata Garantita)
DOC wines are produced in specific well-defined regions - such as Valdadige - according to strict rules designed to preserve the traditional wine-making practices of the individual region. In short, "D.O.C" signifies that the wine is of top quality and that it meets strict Italian standards of excellence.
